Description
The author, a former senior advisor to the State Department, describes how things went wrong in the effort to bring democracy to Iraq because the U. S. was blinded by ideology and ignored planning that was already underway. He explains that the Defense Department was put in charge of post-war reconstruction, despite the plans of the Future of Iraq Project; he describes the infighting within the administration and the faulty assumptions that took hold as fact that contributed to the failure of the effort. Lastly, this book examines the issue of nation-building and foreign policy to provide guidance for the future. [From publisher's description]
